What Is Esports?
How to make a career from your hobby? Almost everyone dreams of earning money by doing their favorite things: singing, painting, traveling, or playing video games. The last one became an idée fixe for some small group of people in the early 70s.
The first competitions between players in video games were in the arcade halls. Space Invader, Tetris, and Pacman were the most popular games to compete for the prizes, not huge but meanable for people who loved video games and played them well.
They have started one of the most exciting directions in sport nowadays. It is too long before people noticed Esports separately from gaming, but they were the first in Esports!
Everything has changed in the '00s. First, people worldwide began to compete in online leagues, and soon, the first offline tournaments (LAN) appeared at the Esports Arena. For those times, it was a revolution at some point. The prize pool of $10 000! Today it sounds funny, but for gamers in the '00s, this prize pool was tremendous. They could prove to themselves and the whole world that Esport's career was real.
The most popular games of those times were – Counter-Strike 1.6, StarCraft, Dota Allstars. Later, the game remaining one of the most popular in Esports even today appeared – League Of Legends (LOL).
The new decade came, and Esports were still unpopular like NBA or NHL, but everything changed in 2011.
It was Gamescom conference in Germany where videogames developers present their new products.
The famous videogames developer and Steam owner (the biggest online videogames store) Valve announced a new game - Dota 2 and tournament for $1 600 000. The name of that tournament was "The International." Of course, it was a marketing strategy to advertise their new product, yet the world of Esports has changed forever after that announcement.
At the end of August, it was the 10th anniversary of the first "The International." After that, Esports became equal to the traditional sport in many countries like Denmark, Sweden, the USA, Russia, South Korea, etc.
This Fall, it will be a true Esports marathon:
Dota 2: The International 10 with the hugest prize pool in the history of Esports - $40 000 000.
CS:GO Major in Stolckholm
League Of Legends Worlds
